Los Alamos National Laboratory Accounts for Nearly $3 Billion of New Mexico’s Economy

UNM study looked at direct jobs, indirect jobs, procurements, other factors

LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico, April 27, 2011—Los Alamos National Laboratory is crucial to New Mexico’s economic health, creating a $2.9 billion impact on the state’s economy and supporting about 24,000 jobs, according to a new University of New Mexico study.

In fiscal year 2009, the Lab directly injected $1.6 billion into New Mexico’s economy, with an additional $1.3 billion resulting from indirect economic spending. The indirect impacts are the ripple effect of LANL vendors purchasing goods and services and LANL employees and vendors’ employees spending their earnings in the region. UNM calculated the Lab’s economic impact based on employee compensation, purchases of goods and services, construction expenditures, taxes, and other outlays.

LANL is the sixth-largest employer in New Mexico, according to UNM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research. Nearly 24,000 jobs in New Mexico were made possible by the Lab’s activities in fiscal year 2009. Of these, 11,685 were direct jobs (employees and contractors), and nearly 12,000 resulted from indirect economic impacts.

NM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research was commissioned by the Laboratory in 2009 to conduct a study of the Lab’s economic impact. The BBER used the IMPLAN® economic impact analysis modeling system as well as proprietary data to produce the report, “Impact of Los Alamos National Laboratory on the Economies of Northern New Mexico and the State as a Whole.”

“The Laboratory has a rich legacy of science in service to the nation. Our history is closely interwoven with the Northern New Mexico region as the sixth-largest employer in the state,” said Lab Director Michael Anastasio. “Not only does the Lab create jobs, but we also support initiatives that promote economic development independent of the Laboratory.”

The seven-county region of Northern New Mexico benefits from 80 percent of the Lab’s economic impact ($2.3 billion), much of it concentrated in the counties of Los Alamos, Santa Fe, and Rio Arriba.

• Los Alamos County receives an estimated billion-dollar economic benefit with nearly 8,000 jobs, 5,000 of which are direct employees and contractors.

• Santa Fe County receives an estimated $672 million economic benefit with 6,400 jobs, 2,300 of which are direct employees and contractors.

• Rio Arriba County receives an estimated $300 million economic benefit with 3,500 jobs, 1,900 of which are direct employees and contractors.

Other economic benefits to the state:

• The Lab’s overall state and local tax impact is estimated to be $136 million, which includes gross receipts tax revenues generated by the direct and indirect economic activity associated with operations and construction expenditures, and employee-paid property taxes.

• The Lab purchased $683 million worth of in-state goods and services—everything from office supplies, architectural, engineering and design fabrication services, information technology products, construction-related purchases, equipment, and accessories to business, consulting, safety and security, project management, and other professional services.

• The Lab’s 3,500 retirees living in New Mexico spent $124 million in retirement benefits in the state and contributed to an overall direct and indirect economic impact of $240 million.

About Los Alamos National Laboratory (www.lanl.gov <http://www.lanl.gov/> )

Los Alamos National Laboratory, a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security, is operated by Los Alamos National Security, LLC, a team composed of Bechtel National, the University of California, The Babcock & Wilcox Company, and URS for the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.

Seems like it was just Christmas! Time flies doesn’t it? It’s that time of year, yard work and spring cleaning. Get rid of the winter blues.

The skis are about ready to be put away for the winter and the spring winds begin to blow in bringing us some amazing spring color in April and May. We experience some really nice spring days where the sun is warm on your back and it brings us energy to get outside and do something fun! By the end of April we start to really warm up and the wind subsides, the flowers start to bloom and the magnificent blue New Mexican sky is hard to beat! The sunsets are amazing and we are all so Thankful we live here.

There are some really amazing places to visit in New Mexico and lots of events scheduled for Locals and Visitors. Just one special place is The Valle Caldera it opens up 7 days a week beginning May 21 through October 10th. Experience fishing, hiking, bike riding, running and horse back riding among the most beautiful wild life, surrounded by the Jemez Mountains. For more information visit www.vallescaldera.gov/comevisit, 1-866-382-5537. A little slice of heaven. After a day at the Valle come to Los Alamos, just 20 minutes away. Stay the night and see our most historical town. Santa Fe, is just 45 minutes east of Los Alamos and there is plenty of culture there as well.

Follow me and I will post happenings in the local area so start your planning.

Happy Spring!!

As you are organizing for fall remember the Holidays will be here before to long. In the midst of de-cluttering my own home I found the most incredible website that will get you started. The web site is www.flylady.net. I can’t say enough about this wonderful site. It is a daily guide and it gives you little things to do everyday. Nothing overwhelming just little 15 minute things you can do to begin to get the clutter out of your house! I have started to follow this daily. It has only been about two weeeks for me but I can already start to see the difference in my house and in my attitude. I don’t feel so overwhelmed and she gives you a morning routine and a bedtime routine to prepare you for the next day. This site is great for anyone, working, non working, parent ect. The FLY stands for, “Finally Loving Yourself”. Please give this a chance it will change your life! My sister has been following Flylady for about 5 years or so. I would love to see what you all think. So Fly, Fly……..

A couple of things to add to my blog about getting your closets in order and starting the kitchen. A client of mine gave me a great sugggestion. There is a website www.organize.com that has complete household items for you to help you organize stuff. There are these clear shoe plastic shoe boxes that I love that my client had all her shoes in. Clear is nice because you can see what shoes they are and it helps keep your shoes in good shape as well as it really helps provide room and organization to your closet. There are small shoe boxes and large, even shoe boxes for boots. The smaller shoe boxes can be found at http://www.organize.com/crclshdr.html and the large ones at http://www.organize.com/crclshdr.html. I think these are really great. Buy a few at a time and this will slowly start to “clear up” the master closet.

They also have great kitchen gadgets that will help you start on your kitchen, so definitely check them out!

I suggested everyone start cleaning out their master bedroom. I was on my way and my son graduated from high school and then the summer began and life just got away from me. I am sure there are a million of you out there that either had a similar situation and life just got busy. Now we are heading into fall. It is really hard to believe.

So let’s just continue getting our homes organized either to get ready to put your house on the market for sale or just for peace of mind. I suggested the Master Bedroom first because this is your sanctuary and this helps us feel at peace and a sense of organization when this area is clean and under control. If you did not have a chance to get it started in May, then let’s go ahead and start this now. Start to clear out summer clothes and pull in the fall wardrobe. Get rid of clothes that you NEVER wear and those that you think you might wear but never do. Get rid of shoes, belts, bags, coats ect. You can donate these items to your favorite charity and get a receipt to help you with your taxes. If your room needs a fresh coat of paint, new comforter, pillows ect. Toss the old magazines and books stacked up on your night stand. One tip for you, if you don’t have good reading lamps, then invest in some that have some character that match your decor. You can get some nice lamps for not toe much money at places such as Target or TJ Max. New curtains or blinds will also make a huge difference. Clean carpets or mop the floors, and don’t forget under the bed.

For those of you that have a clean Master, the next room we are going to tackle is the Kitchen… Yikes. The Kitchen is number two most important room in a house, and it is important that it’s harmonic, peaceful and a place that everyone enjoys. Let’s get started.

My suggestion is to first declutter your cabinets. Do you have old plastic tupperware that you have had for 20 years that has melted in the dishwasher or is stained up and you never use? Toss!! Get rid of old cookware you never use, old plastic cups, and on and on. Clean out pantries, old canned goods that your family will never eat and old spice racks full of unused items. Give to the local food bank or shelter.

Once you’ve decluttered, wipe down the inside and outside of the all of the cabinets and floors. If you don’t have liners in the cabinets you might want to put in some of the rubbermaid shelf liners to protect the bottom of your cabinets. A great suggestion for under the kitchen and bathroom sinks from one of my colleague, is are to purchase vinyl tiles with the peel off back that you can cut to size. Lay those under the sink so you can easily wipe up cleaning chemicals that might ruin the wood on the bottom of the cabinets, use these under the sinks only, of course. You can find vinyl tiles like this at a place like from Lowes or Home Depot.

Step back and look at the kitchen. Does the kitchen need a fresh coat of paint? If your cabinets are dated and you can’t afford to update them, then possibly change or add hardware to your cabinets. I like to think of hardware as jewelry. It adds to the completeness of the kitchen. Lighting? Do you have old light fixtures, these are fairly inexpensive to change if new wiring is not required. You can pick up a new fixture for as little as $30.00 in some cases. Again your local hardware store should have a nice selection. Also, I recommend a great store in Santa Fe called Restore. It is a store from Habitat For Humanity that stock all sorts of goodies for the house, they are located at 2414 Cerrillos.

Two very important tips to remember for your kitchen: Always have a Clean Stove, and a Shinny Clean Sink. These two things help bring perfect harmony to the kitchen. Good Luck!

Let’s try to complete this by the September 24 at the latest. For those of you who don’t need to paint and ad fixtures and hardware then you will be done sooner, then add some fresh fall flowers in a nice vase and enjoy!!

As you go along I this organizing journey, I welcome you to send me photos of before and after and I will post them here. Any other ideas are also welcomed in my comments section.

I don’t know about you but my challenge is getting and keeping organized in my home. I have a full life with a husband, four children, two dogs and a full time job. My hope is to help you as I help myself get organized and start this spring season out feeling free of the clutter.

In the Real Estate business you see lots of different skill types in organization. The biggest tip I can say whether your selling your house or not is to DECLUTTER!! The best way to do this without feeling overwhelmed is to do one room at a time. Now my eldest son is graduating at the end of the month so as I concentrate with you on one room at a time, I will have to do a smaller scale organization and cleaning the rest of my house for the many guests coming for graduation. Then I can go back and really de-clutter with you.

I would like to start in the Master bedroom and the closets. The reason being is this is our sanctuary and this should be clean and organized, fresh clean sheets, fresh paint if need be, clean and organized closets. Get rid of those clothes from the 90′s!! Incorporate your taste, making it warm and inviting, someplace you look forward to going to sleep in, read in, and a place for total relaxation. This means clean your master bathroom as well.

Today is Tuesday May the 11th, 2010, let’s start today. Even if you can’t do a whole lot, make it a goal for us to finish the master bedroom and bath completely by May 25th. I plan on giving each room two full weeks to clean. If it only takes you a week, great!! This is a great goal for everyone because I know how hard it is to keep up with work and family. If you need to paint and redecorate this includes the time needed to do so. I know I need a new bed, my bed is from 1991! As well as my comforter set. My color paint is warm and in good shape but my carpets need a deep cleaning. I would suggest not to deep clean the carpets until we get the whole house clean. Then the last step will be to do the floors, except please vacuum and mop until we can do the deep cleaning.

Now if you have a small house you will accomplish these goals faster which is more reason to pat yourself on the back. If you have a larger house then, we will take these steps and get the house in a place that you feel proud to entertain and have a few parties in. As we finish these tasks we will plan to have a nice party to invite your guests and feel terrific. As we clean the rooms I will ask you to do other tasks as well, like planting some fresh flowers outside in planters or in your garden so that as we finish the inside the outside will look great too. Guys and kids get involved too. Guys, don’t forget your beloved garage, de-clutter that baby for sure!! The whole family can help with the garden and planting. I am going to make a trip to Santa Fe this week and pick up some planters for my deck and some fresh flowers to start setting the stage for a beautiful flower garden on my deck. If you have a suggestion of where to buy great plants please feel free to let me know. We are looking for suggestions!!

OK guys and gals let’s get busy!! If you have any organizational tips or cleaning tips feel free to leave me a comment here and give me the details. We can all learn from one another.

Good luck! Now we will finish the Master on May 25th. What are you waiting for??
